Sipapu Opens Skiing and Snowboarding in NM

This Saturday

Vadito, NM: Skiing and snowboarding finally opens in New Mexico on Saturday.

This Saturday, November 19, Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort will be the first resort open in New Mexico - this will mark the 10th consecutive time Sipapu has opened before any other ski area in the state.

Mountain crews have been working virtually non-stop to get the mountain ready, and they expect to be open from top to bottom starting Saturday, said General Manager John Paul Bradley.

"We've been working hard, really hard, to get things ready for this weekend," he said. "As of right now, it looks like we'll be open from top to bottom, and we expect to have two - possibly three - lifts open. We're also working on a terrain park, too."

For the last decade, Sipapu has more than tripled its snowmaking abilities, which enables northern New Mexico's oldest resort to open first in New Mexico, Bradley said. He added that this year, his snowmaking team began making snow in late October - this marked just the second time in resort history that Sipapu was able to begin snowmaking operations before Halloween.

Starting this weekend, lift tickets are discounted: adult tickets are $20, and teens, kids and seniors pay just $15. As with every year, guests 6 and under, 4th graders (report card required), 40-year-olds and guests ages 70 and older receive a free lift ticket every day. As part of the resort's 60th anniversary this year, 60-year-olds will ski or snowboard for free, too.

Lifts begin turning on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and the resort will be open everyday for Thanksgiving week until Sunday, November 27. Sipapu will resume weekend operations on December 3-4, and daily operations are scheduled to begin on Friday, December 9.

Skiers and snowboarders chomping at the bit to get the season underway will also see a few new improvements this year:

As part of its 60th anniversary, Sipapu will offer free skiing everyday to guests who are 60 years old, and the resort is lining up a few vintage celebrations, too. For more information, visit www.SipapuNM.com.

This year marks the first full season Sipapu has offered the new, 90-foot magic carpet. The new lift, which is similar to a moving walkway in airports and will handle up to 1,000 guests per hour, glides along flush with the surface of the snow and offers beginner skiers and snowboarders an easier way to practice their skills before they ride a chairlift.

As with every off-season, Sipapu carefully maintained the mountain (located just 20 miles southeast of Taos), and during the summer of 2011, mountain staff augmented Sipapu's snowmaking system to help provide the best early season conditions possible. Since 2001, Sipapu has more than tripled its snowmaking abilities, which has enabled the resort to offer New Mexico's longest season for nine straight years.

Sipapu will also open its newest restaurant, Paradise Riverside Bar and Grill. Located just steps from the ski area's most popular lift, Paradise offers outdoor seating, a New Mexican-infused menu, a full bar (with happy hour specials everyday from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.) and live entertainment.

Skiers and snowboarders will get an added "lift" this season: all of Sipapu's restaurants are now proudly serving Starbucks coffee, and the resort now offers an espresso menu, too.

Sipapu will also host a couple of new events in 2011/2012:

* Sipapu is home to the resort's first-ever SkiBike Festival. This event, which happens February 4-5, 2012, will include an impressive lineup of skibike demos (along with free clinics and mountain tours), a skibike giveaway, apres ski activities, a skibike race and even a skibike moonlight ride. This event is completely free and will be ideal for anyone, be it seasonsed skibikers or those brand new to the sport. As always, SkiBikeFun will also host regular skibike demo days (this year, they are scheduled for January 7-8, 2012 and February 25-26, 2012.)

* This year, Sipapu will also roll out Micro Brew-Ski Saturdays: nearly every Saturday afternoon, the resort will introduce guests to a different local or regional brewery. Beer reps will be on hand to offer incredible specials and plenty of swag, too.

As New Mexico's Family-Friendly resort, Sipapu offers free events all season long, perfect for families of all ages and skiers and boarders of all skill levels. Check out www.SipapuNM.com for our events calendar and more.
