All trails on the ski area are available for hiking throughout the spring, summer and fall.
A short drive from the lodge (elevation 8,200 feet), will take you to an unpaved road, which stops 4 to 5 miles from the Jacarita Peak area (elev. 12,835 ft). Passing Serpent Lake, the long climb to the top will be rewarded with spectacular views of Truchas Peak (elev. 13,103 ft) and Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico at an elevation of 13,161 feet.
Many trails are available for hiking near the lodge. Flechado Canyon is a very beautiful, steep, narrow canyon with a small waterfall. Hiking up this canyon brings you to the top of Gallegos Canyon which you can descend to return to Sipapu. This day hike is about 4 to 6 hours.
There are MANY other trails within a short distance of the lodge.
Maps are available at the store.
Sightseeing
The natural setting of Sipapu lends itself to unsurpassed bird and wildlife watching. Watch a herd of Elk graze their way through the meadow as the sun sets. At night, there are an amazing number of stars in the sky. Most of which you don't see until you get away from the city lights. Sit around the fire pit roasting marshmallows or just gaze into the flames, listening to the wolves howl.
